This session will explore Listening and Spoken Language as a communication mode in the field of education for the deaf, including key definitions, the advantages and challenges of Auditory Verbal Therapy, commonly used instructional strategies, and available state and national resources.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will learn the key definitions and evidence-based strategies related to Listening and Spoken Language, and the approach of Auditory Verbal Therapy.

2. Participants will learn the history and development of Listening and Spoken Language as a communication mode.

3. Participants will recognize the communication and instructional options that may be included in Listening and Spoken Language – Auditory Verbal Therapy.

4. Participants will identify possible pros and cons for consideration in developing instructional programming, as well as common misconceptions for educators and parents.

5. Participants will identify the benefit of early intervention on language development using this approach.
