DESCRIPTION:https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_GiXjIF_9QFuOYr9S_KCsqg#/registration \nDespite IEP recommendations for assistive (or access) technology (AT)\, many students with disabilities do not willingly embrace using technology that sets them apart from peers. This can occur due to mismatches between recommended technology and what a student is ready for\, or well-intentioned but misguided introductions to AT. As a result\, students with limited “buy-in” do not use the AT they need to fully engage with information in the classroom and community. In order to mitigate students’ resistance to using AT\, readily (and often freely) available technologies for text-to-speech\, magnification\, and picture-based communication can be introduced first to develop students’ confidence and access habits. By leveraging so-called “low-hanging fruit”\, students can be empowered to experiment with AT on their own terms while developing their sensory efficiency skills for more sophisticated AT usage. \nThis presentation will identify solutions that teachers\, related service providers\, parents\, and paraeducators can implement immediately with students who can benefit from AT. Themes of empowerment and self-determination will inform recommendations for student-centered introductions to technology and highlight examples of how students can feel valued in the entire AT journey from assessment to instruction. The ultimate goal of the presentation is to provide practical\, immediately usable\, and easy-to-implement strategies for introducing and teaching AT to students. With emphasis on a more self-determined learning curve with AT\, practitioners and students alike can feel less overwhelmed by technology and embrace new tools and ways of information engagement with joy and excitement.

Kitchens\, MS\, MBA \nAutistic individuals often find immeasurable struggles living in a world that primarily caters to the neurotypical individual. Sadly\, these struggles are not decreasing but increasing due to the ever-changing pace of things. As life progresses and becomes more complex\, so does the intensity of these individuals’ symptoms. One growing challenge that has magnified many efforts to endure through these complexities has been the prevalence of autistic shutdown and burnout.  \nAutistic therapist Jessica Kitchens has found that this particular battle is one that she and many of her clients face on a regular basis. Utilizing lived experience\, a neurodiversity-affirming framework\, and her proclivity for research\, she shares her own struggles\, along with the numerous factors\, roots\, and triggers that increase the prevalence of shutdown and burnout in all ages.  \nLearner Outcomes: Participants will gain insight into Autistic shutdown and burnout\, enabling them to recognize signs and symptoms in those affected. Participants will deepen their understanding of the triggers and exacerbating factors contributing to Autistic shutdown and burnout\, exploring their interconnectedness and implications. Participants will explore effective coping skills\, techniques\, and therapeutic approaches for addressing and managing Autistic shutdown and burnout\, emphasizing a culturally responsive neurodiversity-affirming framework.
