SUMMARY:What Is an Intervener and How Do I Get One? Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Registration Link: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_gHKuKSOkSACJWKupkMMcPQ \nPresented by Dr. Beth KennedyThe intervener model is an emerging approach to supporting individuals who are DeafBlind\, and teams may be interested in understanding the unique benefits interveners can provide. While the role of an intervener is distinct\, all members of a team can engage in appropriate support by applying the eleven Principles of Intervention to their work. This presentation will introduce the intervener model\, describe the role and training of interveners\, and explore how interveners contribute to effective team-based support. Participants will gain practical tools for determining when an intervener may be appropriate for a child/student who is DeafBlind. The presentation will also provide an overview of current and pending legislation related to interveners.

SUMMARY:Using Text -To-Speech to Support Reading Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Registration link: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Wz4WAfciSaGVwjzbxv-G5A \nPresented by: Linda Bastiani Wilson\, M.A.\, Ed.\, Assistive Technology Specialist \nJoin us for part 3 of our Assessing Access Series! Students with disabilities often struggle to learn to read. Even after learning basic reading skills\, they may continue to struggle to gain meaning from print. Text-to-speech removes the barrier of decoding and fluency and allows students with print disabilities to gain meaning from text. Some students may even develop stronger independent reading skills by using text-to-speech on a regular basis. In this session\, participants will understand the relevant research about text-to-speech\, learn a simple systematic method to determine whether a student would benefit from using text-to-speech\, and determine actions needed to integrate text-to-speech into their student’s learning plans.  \nLearner Objectives: 1. Discuss the claims about text-to-speech that are supported by research 2. Outline three steps for determining whether a student would benefit from using text-to-speech 3. Design an action plan to integrate text-to-speech where appropriate in student learning plans

SUMMARY:All Aboard! The Joy is in the Journey of Access and Accessibility to AT/AAC within the Classroom Day - Day 2 (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Register HERE \nPart 2 of our Assessing Access Series\, when a student is learning to use AT/AAC and its access\, the journey is critical. This is not a destination nor is it a simple or easy process. Instead\, like reading and writing\, it is supposed to be fun\, exciting\, but challenging. Remember when a student is not able to speak easily\, nor demonstrate independent mobility\, the tasks become even more complex. However\, recognizing how to teach and support both the student and the adults on this journey (of learning access and AT/AAC within the activity) will be shared.  \nThree Learning objectives: 1. The participant will be able to define the term “access” within the context of task engagement and AAC use. 2. The participant will be able to identify at least 2 characteristics of two different forms of access\, e.g. eye gaze and 2 switch scanning. 3. The participant will be able to identify 3 physical characteristics of an “active postural control“ position in their students with complex bodies when engaged in scanning with their AT/AAC devices. \nPresented by Karen M Kangas\, OTR/L

SUMMARY:Navigating Autistic Shutdown and Burnout (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Register HERE \nPresented by Jessica C. Kitchens\, MS\, MBA \nAutistic individuals often find immeasurable struggles living in a world that primarily caters to the neurotypical individual. Sadly\, these struggles are not decreasing but increasing due to the ever-changing pace of things. As life progresses and becomes more complex\, so does the intensity of these individuals’ symptoms. One growing challenge that has magnified many efforts to endure through these complexities has been the prevalence of autistic shutdown and burnout.  \nAutistic therapist Jessica Kitchens has found that this particular battle is one that she and many of her clients face on a regular basis. Utilizing lived experience\, a neurodiversity-affirming framework\, and her proclivity for research\, she shares her own struggles\, along with the numerous factors\, roots\, and triggers that increase the prevalence of shutdown and burnout in all ages.  \nLearner Outcomes: Participants will gain insight into Autistic shutdown and burnout\, enabling them to recognize signs and symptoms in those affected. Participants will deepen their understanding of the triggers and exacerbating factors contributing to Autistic shutdown and burnout\, exploring their interconnectedness and implications. Participants will explore effective coping skills\, techniques\, and therapeutic approaches for addressing and managing Autistic shutdown and burnout\, emphasizing a culturally responsive neurodiversity-affirming framework.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Making Materials Clear: Practical Cognitive Accessibility for Alaskan Classrooms presented by Rain Breaw Michaels (CPWA)
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to register! \nAs educators\, we know that barriers to learning and comprehension aren’t always visible. Students with autism\, ADHD\, dyslexia\, or other cognitive disabilities and differences often struggle not with the content itself\, but with the way it is presented in digital documents\, emails\, and online tools. This hands-on session\, led by Google Staff Design Manager and cognitive accessibility expert Rain Breaw Michaels\, will cover immediate\, actionable strategies to improve the clarity and usability of every lesson. What you will learn:Quick Wins for Readability: Discover the simple document settings (fonts\, spacing\, color contrast) that reduce cognitive load for all students. The Power of Chunking: Learn how to organize complex information into smaller\, digestible ‘chunks’ using headings\, lists\, and visual cues\, making long\, complex documents\, assignments\, and presentations easy to navigate.Mastering Built-In AT: Get live demonstrations and practice using the free\, powerful accessibility tools already built into your Chromebooks\, Chrome browser\, and Google Workspace for Edu (Docs\, Slides\, etc.). This includes text-to-speech features\, reading modes\, and custom display settings.Designing for Independence: Understand how these practical design techniques don’t just help with meeting compliance standards\, but actively support student executive function\, memory\, and comprehension. The goal of this training is to give you a checklist of practical strategies you can apply the very next day to create a more inclusive\, accessible\, and successful learning environment for all of your students.

SUMMARY:The Low-Hanging Fruit of Assistive Technology Webinar Presented by Yue-Ting Siu\, TVI/O&M\, Ph.D
DESCRIPTION:https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_GiXjIF_9QFuOYr9S_KCsqg#/registration \nDespite IEP recommendations for assistive (or access) technology (AT)\, many students with disabilities do not willingly embrace using technology that sets them apart from peers. This can occur due to mismatches between recommended technology and what a student is ready for\, or well-intentioned but misguided introductions to AT. As a result\, students with limited “buy-in” do not use the AT they need to fully engage with information in the classroom and community. In order to mitigate students’ resistance to using AT\, readily (and often freely) available technologies for text-to-speech\, magnification\, and picture-based communication can be introduced first to develop students’ confidence and access habits. By leveraging so-called “low-hanging fruit”\, students can be empowered to experiment with AT on their own terms while developing their sensory efficiency skills for more sophisticated AT usage. \nThis presentation will identify solutions that teachers\, related service providers\, parents\, and paraeducators can implement immediately with students who can benefit from AT. Themes of empowerment and self-determination will inform recommendations for student-centered introductions to technology and highlight examples of how students can feel valued in the entire AT journey from assessment to instruction. The ultimate goal of the presentation is to provide practical\, immediately usable\, and easy-to-implement strategies for introducing and teaching AT to students. With emphasis on a more self-determined learning curve with AT\, practitioners and students alike can feel less overwhelmed by technology and embrace new tools and ways of information engagement with joy and excitement.
